MAKE IT COLORFUL

My favorite part of weaving is seeing the patterns that emerge when you use different colors. For this layout, I chose three colors - pink, blue and yellow. I find that using three colors, or another odd number, tends to have the best results. If you look closely, you can see a chevron-like pattern on my page. For added interested, I varied the length of the strips on each edge and pennantcut the blue strips. A splatter of mist and journaling strips in crisp white stand out against the bright colors, patterns and texture. If you want your patterned papers to have a big effect on your next layout, try weaving a few together. The impact is immediate and the texture is fantastic!

PHOTO WEAVING
HEAD IN THE CLOUDS
I love the look of weaving and wondered if I could create some wall art that included both photos and something woven. Then the idea came to weave the photo and voila! An artsy piece perfect for adding to a canvas, frame or even scrapbook page. 1. Start with two copies of the same photo. I highly suggest that the subject be simple - no detailed scenes or faces.

As you go, you may find that your picture doesn't match up - try weaving more tightly, and if that doesn't work, trim down trouble strips until the picture matches up again. I even left out a few strips to keep my photo consistent and I bet you couldn't even tell. I could have added my woven photo to a frame, but I decided to scrap it instead. The Oh Happy Day line was a perfect match for my summer sky. The next time you want to get artsy with a photograph, give this technique a try. Paper-weaving is a fun technique to use with patterned papers. And in my case, I decided to weave some maps from our recent trip to Maui. Here's how it's done. 1. Line strips of paper up and tape down with repositionable tape. 2. Take your horizontal strips and start weaving them over and under the vertical strips. 3. Here's what it looks like when you are done. You can leave the ends ragged, cut them evenly, or you can even create a frame with other strips of paper to hold it down. I decided to leave the tops kind of ragged and the sides clean with a contrasting strip of patterned paper. I also thought it was a fun idea to turn the weave on a diagonal to create the desired movement for my page.

The Oh Happy Day and Flower Child collections are perfect for summertime projects! For this front door decoration I used various elements from the two collections and adhered them to a 12x12 canvas. The large green chevron paper is perfect to use as grass, the green swirly paper is great for the trees, and I just can't get enough of those chevron printed clouds! To give the project a cozy handmade feeling, I hand stitched around most of the elements. My living room is the one room of my home that I try put a lot of attention in decorating and details. That’s because it is the place where I entertain. It’s the place where family and friends gather when they visit, and the place they spend the most time. As a result, I’m always looking for simple, economical ways to add a little decoration and a bit of my personality to my living room. I’ve found one of my favorite ways to do that is to decorate a frame with pretty patterned papers. The frame I used here is an inexpensive little, split frame I found at a box store. I think it cost me all of $1. I made it by removing the frame’s glass and inserting some patterned papers from GCD Studios’ Flower Child collection. You’ll notice on the right side that I added some pink strips, too, to the top and the bottom. I finished it off with a simple monogram mounted to cardstock and patterned paper. It’s mounted on the frame with foam tape so I could add a wooden clip to the top. I also used a label maker to make write the year my family began. You might to consider putting the day you were married for your frame. The great thing about this little frame is when you get tired of it, you can easily switch out the papers and get a whole new look. I have a happy kitchen. My walls are pale yellow, my cabinets are bright aqua, and my counters a deep black. The only thing it was missing was a fun and cheery clock. Making the clock was easy. I applied a thin layer of Mod Podge to the clock base and adhered the paper. Once dry, I trimmed the excess paper with a craft knife. The roses are composed of several fussy cut pieces layered with foam. Once all of the roses were in place, I assembled the clock assembly and I was done! It's safe to say that a summer cover of a magazine should be bright and happy. This was the obvious focus as we chose the Flower Child collection to work with. This collection is charged with colors of ocean blues, sunshine yellow and friendly pinks. Wanting to keep the design playful, the water splash was hand cut and mounted with foam tape on to white cardstock. It's 3D elements draws your eye and focus to it, while the pattern papers soothes and complements the photo. The bottom right corner has charming flowers cut out by hand and layered with the title. Adding in some twine and pearls in the center of the flower, give it a completed look. Once the layout was made, we created our own beachy back drop. Using sand and seashells on a clean canvas is the perfect use for display.

mason jar by Julie Overby There's something powerful about the crashing sounds of endless ocean waves. So many memories are made at the beach! Why not capture some of those moments by collecting sand or shells and displaying them in a decorated mason jar? I simply added some burlap trim around the top. Then I cut, embossed, and layered two Spellbinders jar labels together and adhered them to the jar. I used alphabet stickers on an oval to create the title of my collection.

love at first sight by Jennifer Chapin I knew I wanted to include a special keepsake in this project -- the first ultrasound photo of my son. I used patterned papers from the Oh Happy Day and Flower Child collections to go with the boy theme, along with a heart and a few stars. This will be a great piece to add to the nursery!

dinosaur roar by Jennifer Chapin One great way to incorporate keepsakes on your layout is to put them in a pocket. For this page, I included a couple of tickets from the museum exhibit we visited. I used a pre-made pocket and tucked them in, along with a tag for my journaling. You can get creative and use an envelope or even make your own pocket with some vellum or patterned paper and a sewing machine!

Use It. I pretty much followed the sketch exactly for my card. I kept the circle rings except the one I replaced with 3 goosebumps. The sentiment in place of the photos is the focus of my card. I matted it with a fish tail banner. The two flowers were fussy cut from patterned paper and layered to form a more dimensional flower. The finished card size is 5.5" x 5.5".

Flip It. I love working with sketches - they always jump start creativity! For my layout, I flipped the sketch upside down and went to town! The colors in Oh Happy Day really brought out Alyssa in each of the photos on this page! This page makes me really happy!

Alter It. While I kept the basics the same with the rounded corners and two photos on the layout, I changed a few details about my page. I put the title in a different spot, used much smaller circles, and changed the strips of paper a bit. Rather than using flowers, I chose to use fun clouds to accent my page.

A Tree•T For You Gift Card Holder by Nina Yang The bright and happy colors from Flower Child and Oh Happy Day blended well together. The birds were hand cut from Abbie's Sunshine Paper. I mounted a gift card closer to the bottom of the tree so the whole card can have enough weight at the lower portion to stand on itself. The finished card measures 5.5" x 6.25".

Too Cute Layout by Pam Callaghan I really like creating happy, bright colored layouts. I love photography, so mixing the two is even better. The local zoo has a great bird exhibit and I was able to get natural photos of brightly colored birds from all over the world. I also love this precious photo I caught of my son watching the birds while they interacted with each other.
